Too make a story short, I want to play this tune in my "band" and I would like some opinions on how other people might play it... anyway here's what I have now: Beast Of Burden The Rolling Stones ---2-/-4--4------7---4----------5 ---3-/-5--5------7---5----------5 ---2-/-4--4------8---6----------6 -----------------9-------5-/-7--- That's the most important part of the song - the chorus is just standard straight up chords (I think) but I can't remember them at the moment. What I need help on is that the above doesn't sound thick enough - a bit too plain. Anyone play it differently? Also, as a method for playing in a band with one guitarist, would you just keep playing the riff over and over instead of soloing off in the song - since I can't do both at the same time, and since I am not that good, I'd think to play what the audience knows best: the above riff. Comments and suggestions are very welcome. Scott -- Life is easy when you're being kept afloat... Scott A. Rasche ...so I won't rock no boats. The songs is in open G tuning (D G D G B D). If you want to really be Keith Richards-esque, remove the low D string completely. First there is the opening riff as follows: D 12----12--12--12--12-----x----0------5----5--7----0----------------- B 12----12--12--13--12-----x----0------5----5--7----0----------------- G 12----12--12--12--12-----9----0------5----5--7----0----------------- D 12----12--12--14--12-----9----0------5----5--7----0----------------- G 12----12--12--12--12-----9----0------5----5--7----0----------------- D -------------------------------------------------------------------- While I'm at it, I'll get all of the tab out of the way first. Here is the tab for the chorus parts: After All is said and done D 12----12--12--12--12-----x----x------7------------------------------ B 12----12--12--13--12-----x----x------7------------------------------ G 12----12--12--12--12-----9----9------7------------------------------ D 12----12--12--14--12-----9----9------7------------------------------ G 12----12--12--12--12-----9----9------7------------------------------ D -------------------------------------------------------------------- I gotta move while it's still fun D 12----12--12--12--12-----x----x------7------------------------------ B 12----12--12--13--12-----x----x------7------------------------------ G 12----12--12--12--12-----9----9------7------------------------------ D 12----12--12--14--12-----9----9------7------------------------------ G 12----12--12--12--12-----9----9------7------------------------------ D -------------------------------------------------------------------- I better walk before they make me run D 12----12--12--12--12-----x----0------5-------7----0----------------- B 12----12--12--13--12-----x----0------5-------7----0----------------- G 12----12--12--12--12-----9----0------5-------7----0----------------- D 12----12--12--14--12-----9----0------5-------7----0----------------- G 12----12--12--12--12-----9----0------5-------7----0----------------- D -------------------------------------------------------------------- Some chords you'll need to know in open G D G D G B D ---------------- G 0 0 0 0 0 0 and also 12 12 12 12 12 12 C 5 5 5 5 5 5 D 7 7 7 7 7 7 Emin x 9 9 9 x x F 10 10 10 10 10 10 A# 3 3 3 3 3 3 A common Keith chord is like you see on the fourth chording in the opening riff. It is like hammering on the same chord position you would call in standard (concert) guitar tuning for A minor augmented. For a C position chord, the hammer on would go: D G D G B D D G D G B D C-chord 5 5 5 5 5 5 hammer on F-chord 5 5 7 5 6 5 If you can do this, you can play Start Me Up, Brown Sugar, etc. etc. etc... Better Walk Before They Make Me Run by Jagger/Richards (opening riff) F Emin D F Emin D Worked the bars and sideshows along the twighlight zone G Only a crowd can make you feel so alone G And it really hit home F Emin D F Emin D Booze and pills and powders, you can choose your medicine G D Well here's another goodbye to another good friend (use chorus tab) After all is said and done I better move while it's still fun I better walk before they make me run Watched the taillights fading, there ain't a dry eye in the house They're laughing and singing Started dancing and drifting as I left town Gonna find my way to heaven, `cause I did my time in hell I wasn't looking too good but I was feeling real well After all is said and done I better move I had my fun I better walk before they make me run (bridge) G - D - F - C - A# G - D - F - C - A# G - D - F - C - D After all is said and done I better move, it's still fun I better walk before they make me I better walk before they make me I better walk before they make me run Steve, I don't know if your system ate this last week so I'll send it to you again. Oops, I just noticed an error. I really need to slow down and read these things. If you did get it friday, disregard and use this one. Sorry. Try substituting this for the 12th fret stuff until you get the hang of it: D -0-----0---0---0---0-----x----0------5----5--7----0----------------- B -0-----0---0---1---0-----x----0------5----5--7----0----------------- G -0-----0---0---0---0-----9----0------5----5--7----0----------------- D -0-----0---0---2---0-----9----0------5----5--7----0----------------- G -0-----0---0---0---0-----9----0------5----5--7----0----------------- D -------------------------------------------------------------------- This won't sound right as far as octave is concerned but it is the same chord and may help you get the hang of it. When you get to the top of the guitar neck in open G, it has a funny ring to it when you first start playing with it. A good easy open G song I've been messing with lately is George Thorogood's version of `Move It On Over'. Simple 12 bar blues progression in the key of G so your chords are G 0 0 0 0 0 0 C 5 5 5 5 5 5 D 7 7 7 7 7 7 It's easy and fun to play. Here's the lyrics from cs.uwp.edu: GEORGE THOROGOOD - MOVE IT ON OVER (Hank Williams) I come in last night about half past ten, That baby of mine wouldn't let me in. So move it on over. Rock it on over. Move over little dog, a mean, old dog is movin' in. She told me not to mess around, But I done let the deal go down. Move it on over. Rock it on over. Move over nice dog, a big, fat dog is movin' in. She changed the lock on my back door, Now my key won't fit no more. Move it on over. Rock it on over. Move over nice dog, a mean, old dog is movin' in. She threw me out just as pretty as she pleased. Pretty soon I've been scratchin' fleas. Move it on over. Slide it on over. Move over nice dog, a mean, old dog is movin' in. Yeah! Listen to me dog before you start to whine, That side's yours and this side's mine. Move it on over. Rock it on over. Move over little dog, a big, old dog is movin' in. Yeah! She changed the lock on my back door, Now my key won't fit no more. Move it on over. Rock it on over. Move over little dog, a big, old dog is movin' in. Move it on over. Move it on over. Move it on over. Won't'cha rock it on over. Move over cool dogs, a hot dog's movin' in. I'll have you getting that open G sound yet. Open G is sort of my personal guitar crusade. -Jim Still lazy. B E My heart starts beating like a big bass drum D >From: euakan@eua.ericsson.se (Theo.Kanter) >Subject: CHORDS: Brown Sugar Intro BROWN SUGAR INTRO There have been a few requests on the net for more "Stones stuff". I presume that means "Keith Richard". I would like to contribute with an attempt on the Brown Sugar Intro. In previous letters tabulatures were presented with more complex fingering - without retuning the instrument. The following is more straightforward. N.B. Open-G tuning is requiered. Through away your lower-D string if you are perticular about sounding like Keith does. X, Y, Z are the 10th, 11th an 12th position. In hex that would be A, B, C but confusing to use.
